No Jardim reúne cerca de uma dezena de trabalhos realizados entre 2022 e 2023. Memórias e experiências da intimidade são conjugadas com imagética diversa, desde literatura às redes sociais, representações eróticas ou cinema, na procura de explorar as complexidades da vida contemporânea. Justapondo os grandes temas da pintura histórica com a banalidade das narrativas individuais, No Jardim apresenta-se como uma série de breves considerações sobre as ambiguidades das relações sociais e interpessoais.

No Jardim (“In the Garden”) brings together a series of works produced between 2022 and 2023. Intimate matters and recollections are conjugated with diverse imagery spanning from literature to social media, cinema or erotic representations, looking to create dissected portraits of contemporary life. Juxtaposing the grandeur of historical painting with the banality of individual narratives, No Jardim presents itself as a collection of brief considerations about the ambiguities of social and interpersonal relationships.

Encontra-se a realizar o MA Fine Arts na City & Guilds of London Art School enquanto bolseiro da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. É licenciado em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes do Porto, tendo estudado em intercâmbio na École des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

 

Afonso Rocha foi recentemente distinguido com a prestigiosa Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, para além do Prémio de Pintura D. Fernando II, na XVIII edição do Prémio de Pintura e Escultura de Sintra D. Fernando II, uma Innovate Artist Grant Honnourable Mention e uma ArtsinSquare Grant. Em 2023 foi selecionado para o Jackson’s Painting Prize, expondo na Bankside Gallery, Londres.

 

O seu trabalho tem sido incluído em múltiplas exposições e encontra-se representado em coleções públicas e privadas em Portugal, Reino Unido, Espanha, França, Brasil e Luxemburgo.

He is currently enrolled on the MA Fine Arts course at City & Guilds of London Art School as a grantee of The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He holds a BA (Hons) from the Porto Faculty of Fine Arts, with a semester-long stay at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

 

Afonso has been awarded prizes including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, the D. Fernando II Painting Award, an Innovate Artist Grant Honourable Mention and an ArtsinSquare Grant. In 2023 he was shortlisted for the Jackson´s Painting Prize, exhibiting at the Bankside Gallery, London.

 

His work has been included in multiple group and is held in public and private collections in Portugal, UK, Spain, France, Brazil and Luxembourg.
